On #1 (the haircut)

Since the pandemic started, I've been cutting my hair pretty short. #1 all over, it's quick and cheap and saves me from how oppressively thick my hair is.

The guy who owns and runs the hairdresser closest to me is a nice bloke who's good at his job. Great at making you comfy, has good conversation. But my favourite thing about getting a haircut from him is that no matter what it is, he does it thoughtfully and carefully. He's on holiday right now - good for him.

All of this was at the forefront of my mind today as one of his employees kind of haphazardly hacked at my head.

The thing about the #1 haircut is that as basically the most mundane cut imaginable, I guess it seems really easy. Run the clippers over, clean up a little, you're golden. But for people like myself who are a little more obsessive detail-oriented, it's so easy to tell when someone isn't putting in the effort or paying attention to the details. There is genuine skill and finesse in doing a good #1. And if that's not present in the haircut I basically lose my mind when I get home. The curse of having a funny-shaped head and a funny-shaped brain.

So the takeaway here is that it's always worth paying attention to doing the mundane things correctly. My afternoon task today is correcting a botched amp install inside my car's dashboard: I trusted that the manufacturer-supplied double-sided tape would hold, and it most certainly did not. So it's time to find a spot to zip-tie it to. Should have done the mundane thing (more) correctly. A good lesson.
